Important Medicaid Updates
During the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE), the federal government stopped asking Medicaid enrollees to renew their benefits. Now that the PHE is over, they are requiring states to start renewing members’ eligibility again. This is called “Medicaid Redeterminations” or “Medicaid Renewals.” Households with children began to receive renewal notices in December 2023. About half of children in Rhode Island have health care coverage through Medicaid. Rhode Island Medicaid offers support services essential to student learning, such as medical care, mental health care, and therapies that are part of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Keeping students covered is essential for the well-being of our community.
- If a yellow or green letter is received in the mail, it is from the state, and we would like to encourage those who receive it to act immediately. This letter contains the next steps in the renewal process and is important to read carefully. For more questions, call or access the HealthSourceRI website and use their online chat function for further assistance.
Action Steps
1. Update your contact information. Make sure the State has your current address, phone number, and email.
2. Watch for your yellow or green notice in the mail. The State may tell you that your coverage is being automatically renewed or will ask you for more information.
3. Take action right away. Please submit your signed forms and any documents the State requested as soon as possible. You must submit your documents by the date on your notice.
